Health Insurance is available to individuals
and groups at affordable prices
Generally
speaking health insurance is the most often misunderstood
of all the various insurances prevalent in today’s society.
In this brief space we will attempt to explain the differences
in health insurance policies issued for groups versus those
issued for individuals. Hopefully you will find this information
about health insurance a valuable resource. We will not address
the issue of state health insurance benefits mandated here.
You may access that information through your local insurance
department. A listing of state insurance departments is contained
in this site for your convenience. Health insurance mandates
are usually contained in a separate pamphlet with easy to
understand terms.
Group
health insurance policies are usually sponsored by employers,
professional associations, and fraternal organizations (where
you must be a regular dues paying member or participant, the
group cannot have been formed solely for the purpose of buying
health insurance). The intention is for the members of these
organizations to have access to affordable health insurance
plans. These health insurance plans are normally viewed as
being for the benefit of members who wouldn’t otherwise
have that access on their own. The size of the risk pool has
a direct impact on the cost of health insurance for every
member of the group. Health insurance rates are also affected
in many plans by the average age of the group members to be
covered. Another factor in health insurance rates is the locality
of the group.
Individual
policies are written not simply for a single person. An individual
health insurance policy may be written to provide coverage
for an entire family including husband, wife and children,
or simply both spouses. The concept of individual health insurance
simply refers to the fact that this person or unit is not
covered by a group health insurance plan. In some states such
as New Jersey, a self-employed person may purchase what is
considered by state law to be a group health insurance plan
(just a group of one). There are still mandated benefits that
must be present within any health insurance policy. States
may choose to mandate the benefits differently if it is considered
a group of one than if it was and individual policy.
